What is yoga for kids?

Yoga for kids is very different than most adult classes.  Children are encouraged to explore and discover the mind and body in a fun-filled way.  The use of animated postures and basic stretching exercises promotes strength, flexibility and body awareness.  Breathing and visualization teaches children how to focus, relax and develop self-control.

What are the benefits?

There are so many!!  A few are increased concentration, flexibility, coordination, as well as a safe outlet to express energy, creativity and imagination.  Using yoga as a cornerstone throughout classes, we combine playing, noncompetitive games, singing, dancing, art, stories and open discussion to engage and educate the whole child.  Yoga will boost strength, develop stress-coping skills and increase attention.  The effects of yoga will last well beyond the yoga mat!

Yoga will also cultivate a peaceful, relaxed state of mind and body.  Self-love and self-esteem, as well as respect for others and the environment, are foundations of each class.  Fostering language development, learning anatomy and health and social interaction are big pluses too!!

What is a typical class like?

We usually start the class with some kind of introduction game and/or theme of the class.  We may go "apple picking" for the day, or take a wild safari adventure or maybe even visit the beach!  We combine the theme with related games, books, art, music, etc. so that we combine energetic bursts with calm relaxation.  Children explore yoga poses by mimicking animals and nature.  Yoga classes are silly, fun and interactive.  And at the end we always practice relaxation poses with guided meditation and foot massages!!
